Yoga is a 5,000 year old tradition. The word yoga in sanskrit means "union". Union refers to connecting the mind, body and spirit. Hatha Yoga is the root and foundation of all other forms of yoga. Traditional Hatha Yoga combines asanas (poses), breathing techniques and meditation.
Pilates was developed by Joseph Pilates as a form of exercise to aid muscle strengthening and stretching. He developed 34 original exercises to correct imbalances in the body and strengthen core muscles. These exercises help support and protect the lower back from injury. In 1926 Joseph Pilates brought his knowledge to New York and opened the first studio in America. By the 1980's many of his students went on to set up their own studios, with each teacher adding their own personal twists. Pilates focuses on core stabilization techniques, stability, and proper breathing techniques.
